JUSTIN URQUHART STEWART, CO-FOUNDER AND HEAD OF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT
DAVID CARROLL, HEAD OF STRATEGY
Seven Investment Management | 10:05 – 10:35
Talk Title: Has the investment market gone mad – what are you going to do now?
Justin Urquhart Stewart: With an early career that spanned the vineyards of Europe, the docks of Southampton and finance in Asia, Justin went onto establish Broker Services at what became Barclays Stockbrokers. Today he is one of the most recognisable and trusted market commentators on television, radio and in the press. He is also one of the co-founders of 7IM.
Together with Tom Sheridan, Justin founded 7IM to deliver radical common sense in an industry where that quality is hard to find. As Head of Corporate Development, he ensures the principle of doing the right thing is as powerful today as it was at the outset. As an enthusiast of financial education and service, he is a champion of providing clients the very best, clearly expressed.
David Carroll: For nearly 30 years, David has been focusing on client relationships, which probably reveals everything that matters about his service belief system. Working with Justin and Tom, man and boy at Barclays Stockbrokers and Prudential Bache, he was also one of the original ‘seven’.
As Head of Strategy, David is ensuring that as 7IM grows, it does so in a way that continues to focus single-mindedly on the client. Never one to be far away from what really matters, he also continues to be a practitioner, holding true to the principle that he’d never suggest anything he wouldn’t do himself: in investment matters at least.

SPECIAL GUEST: ARRON BANKS, ELDON INSURANCE GROUP INTERVIEWED BY: SWEN LORENZ, MASTER INVESTOR LTD.
Eldon Insurance Group | 12:30 – 12:50
Talk Title: The use of Artificial Intelligence in Social Media
As serial entrepreneur in the insurance sector, Arron Banks has built a business empire from virtually nothing. He is also an avid private investor, counting stakes in diamond mines in Africa among his investments. He even once worked as consultant for Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, and keeps a framed $5 bill signed by Buffet in his office. The signed bill hangs alongside a certificate for a single Berkshire Hathaway share that he purchased for $85,000 a decade ago and which is now worth $260,000 – testament to his foresight!
Having recently made a name for himself as financial backer of the Leave.EU campaign, Banks can count unique experience in using social media for corporate communication among his skills. In less than 12 months, he built a social media movement that eventually reached 30m people across the UK. Building on the experience gained during this campaign, Banks is now planning to turn Eldon Insurance into “the world’s most technologically advanced direct insurance group”.
How does the growing use of social media (and artifical intelligence) affect private investors, which investment opportunities arise out of these changes, and how will politics continue to influence investment returns?
Arron will share some of his insights in a 20 minute Main Stage interview hosted by Master Investor’s Swen Lorenz.

LUCIUS CARY AND ANDREA MICA
Oxford Technology | 15:15 – 15:25
Talk Title: Investing through the Oxford Technology (S)EIS Fund.
Lucius Cary is the founder and managing director of Oxford Technology, which has specialised in making and managing investments in start-up technology-based businesses since 1983.
Prior to joining Oxford Technology, Andrea Mica worked in the entrepreneurial, technology and investment field – technology licensing, growing technology companies and identifying new technologies to invest in.
The SEIS scheme offers super-generous tax reliefs for taking the risk of investing in start-ups. The key to success (mathematically speaking) is to invest in high-risk high reward start-ups. The losses on the failures are all-but eliminated by the initial tax reliefs and later, loss relief. The gains of the winners are tax free.
But despite knowing that this is the best strategy from a mathematical viewpoint, most investors find it hard to make genuinely high risk investments high reqward investments when it comes to the point. The temptation to invest in ’safe’ investments is often too great to resist.
Oxford Technology has specialised in investing in technology start-ups since 1983, and technology start-ups are probably the riskiest of all forms of investment. There are so many things which can and do go wrong. But the other side of the coin, is that the gains can be very large when things go well.
So the maths says that this strategy should work.
And, four years into the fund, everything is looking good. Full details on www.oxfordtechnology.com
Perhaps our most distinguishing feature as investors is that all our investments are near Oxford and we get actively involved, usually by means of frequent informal meetings, to help our investees. The scientists in whom we invest may be future Nobel laureates but they probably won’t have completed a VAT return or negotiated a deal with a US distributor before.

David Paul has been trading in the financial markets since 1982 and as a self-supporting trader since 1988. He is a qualified Mechanical Engineer with a PhD in applied Mathematics. His first job after University was with mining firm Anglo and was Head of Research for an Anglo subsidiary named Boart International prior to becoming a full time trader. In 1990 he began to move from unleveraged share trading to short term leveraged trading of the Ft100 contract and in the last 10 years to trading in the Foreign Exchange markets. His plan is to make cash from short term trading and to invest that cash in companies that are growing earnings both aggressively and safely. It’s the same model that Soros used in the Quantum Fund. In 1992 after speaking at an investment club he was asked to train a group of traders and this lead to a second career as a trading coach and mentor. Over the last 20 plus years he has done seminars in trading of stocks, futures and Forex all over the world. These seminars have been conducted at both retail and institutional level. In 2008 along with Tom Hougaard he started WhichWayToday. The company gives real time calls in stock indices and Forex markets. He still trades there and lends a hand when the full time traders needs a break. While in London during 2010 trading at Whichwaytoday he discovered the power of the VectorVest stock market trading program. He started there as a customer but became so happy with the product that he is, at the time of writing, the MD of VectorVest UK and VectorVest SA. He continues to trade short term for cash and to bank that cash into more solid longer term UK shares for both growth and dividend income using the VectorVest methodology.
