Goodwood wasn’t Glorious. It was seconds all week and cost me £60,000. I know some bigheads will immediately point out that it is much safer to bet each way. But I disagree since Valhalla is crammed only with heroes.

For the Oldies: Since we have run out of room I have been going through the vast number of books stored in our flat. I have chucked out only twenty or so but find it very hard to cull matters in hand much further since I always recall an interesting point or two stored somewhere. That noted, I came across Auberon Waugh’s Will This Do? and, refreshed about English (of a sort) life in the second half of the twentieth century, bunged off a copy to a chum. I kept mine. I have now launched into Jeffrey Bernard’s Low Life columns from the Spectator; they are terrifically funny.

The grand ladies footy match was really engaging. Looking round the stadium I saw a lot of men doing a lot of looking. Since I am a legman I do not blame them and suppose a big rise in the birth rate in nine months’ time.

Finally, Victor Hill’s piece on the Eurozone last week was, as ever, distinguished. He drew attention to the anomalous position that Euro-denominated French government debt yields about 0.6% p.a. more than the German equivalent. This is not supposed to happen in Euroland.
Actually, it is far worse than that in that Italian government debt yields about 2% p.a. more. This is fantasy land.
All this is set against a possible imminent war in Europe. Caramba!
